Performance of Indian IPO’s
If we look at Indian stock market which is performing well and has doubled since its low in March 2009. From low 8325 it is trading at 18,512 now is more than doubled in last two years. Indian economy is growing at robust pace and performance of the economy is very good in last two years. But if we look at the performance of the IPO (Initial Public Offering) is really very bad.
If we look at the performance then almost 74% of total 222 listed from 2007 are trading below their issue price. Almost 27% of total issues lost more than 70% of their issue price and 16% lost their 80% and above. This performance is extremely bad and it is same over the years. 93% and above issues of 2010 are trading below their issue and some of them are performed really badly. The government entities are no exception to them.
If we look at why the performance of IPO is so bad, there are few notable points which comes to the forefront.
· The offer prices of these IPO’s are very aggressive and there is very little or no room is left for the short term appreciation of the share price. Some of the big companies has not done well on the stock market, MPSEZ, NTPC,NMDC and NHPC. Some of the IPO's has even lost upto 90% of their worth.
· The second most important point is the lead manager and under writer. If you get good lead manager and under writer and some hired analyst and paid media, it is done. The issue is over subscribed.
· The marketing is very important and network of broker plays key role in the sale of these IPO’s.
· Even though it was mandatory to get rating on IPO’s but rarely investor’s look at it and lead manager and under writer are the one who sale it.
· Those where the good old days when IPO pricing was approved by the ministry of company affairs and those were really good days when retail investor are protected from manipulation.
· Even though SEBI is very proactive in market but has so far fail to control this issue.

Indian Stock Market IPO and FPO Future Prospects
Presently Indian Market is around BSE Sensex 18500 and NSE Nifty around 5556. They are hoving around this range for quite some time. The volatility is very high and will remain so in 2011-12 fiscal year. ( Fiscal year is from 1st April to 31st March). The market will remain volatile and will be dependent upon global liquidity and market movements. It will be range bound for 2011-12.
The real issue is the IPO and their performance. If IPO are doing badly why? When the market in general has done well. IPO should have done good. But IPO's are performing very badly. Is SEBI to be blame, rating agencies to be blame? Who is responsible for this. This is very difficult question to answer. I don't think any one answer this. What I can answer is " How IPO's will be doing in future." ( future IPO's)
The real problem with IPO's are pricing, very aggressive pricing is first and formost reason for the very bad performance of these IPO's. The pricing of the IPO's are based on current market fundamentals and ratio's, the numbers are for the future operations. This method of valueing IPO based on current market valuations and fundamentals does not leave any room for the further appreciation of the stock. It left the stock only one way, if anything goes wrong, very little down side of performance or negative news, newly listed stock goes down. The promoter has not left any room for the appreciation of stock and new investor, share holder may benefit from it. The promoter has eaten up all cream and what is left is affered to the market like skimmed milk. Even though most of the IPO's are rated OK but no one really looks at rating. The market maker, lead manager, his broker and marketing network is what matters. If promoter has skills to get best lead manger then he is assured of sell and money. The under writter make money and so is the lead manager. Only investors loose money.
I do not see any fundamental change in this scenerio and IPO will continue to perform badly on the stock market after listing.
